Clean Hydrogen Production Standard Guidance
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released an updated guidance document containing DOE's proposal for a Clean Hydrogen Production Standard (CHPS), developed to meet the requirements of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), Section 40315. The updated guidance takes into account feedback received during the public comment period in response to the draft guidance document issued in September 2022.
This updated guidance establishes a target of 4.0 kgCO2e/kgH2 for life cycle (defined here as "well-to-gate") greenhouse emissions associated with hydrogen production, accounting for multiple requirements within the BIL provision.
